Pupil Premium

The government believes that the pupil premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals and their peers.

At Grove Street Primary we received a pupil premium of £244 240 (2017/2018) to improve the outcomes for our children who receive free school meals.

We use the money in the following ways:

  • High Staffing Ratio – We use a considerable amount of the funding to ensure we have a low pupil/teacher ratio. This means smaller class sizes enabling more adult support for our children.
  • Free Breakfast – Your child can receive a nutritional start to the day of cereal, toast and drink for free.  Missing breakfast can have a huge effect on your child’s performance; we make certain they can start their learning without feeling hungry. 
  • Nurture Group – This is a small group of 6 to 8 children  based in our Sunshine Room and staffed by two supportive adults. Nurture groups offer a short term, focussed, intervention strategy, which addresses barriers to learning arising from social / emotional and/or behavioural difficulties, in an inclusive, supportive manner. Children continue to remain part of their own class group and eventually return to their own classes. It makes a huge difference to the lives of our children, meaning they can return back to the classroom ready to access their learning.
  • Gilbrook – We use part of the Pupil Premium to access Gilbrook Services. Gilbrook is a specialist behavioural school that provides advice and support to schools throughout the Wirral. We feel that this has significantly helped staff and children maintain strong, caring and respectful relationships throughout the school.
  • SENAT – We identified that a significant percentage of our Pupil Premium children also have a Special Educational Need (SEN). We use part of the Pupil Premium to purchase additional support for our SEN children. This work enables the outcomes for our SEN children to improve.
  • 1st Class at Number – this is an intervention strategy to improve the mathematical outcomes for our children. Although not exclusively used by children in receipt of Pupil Premium, this programme has improved the attainment of children, supporting them to achieve in mathematics.
  • Nessie – Nessie is a specialist dyslexic e- learning programme that provides support in filling in gaps in children’s understanding of spelling.  Although not exclusively used by children in receipt of Pupil Premium, this programme helps children catch up with gaps in their phonic knowledge meaning they can achieve their full potential in Reading and Writing.
  • Wellcom - This is a Speech and Language Programme that assesses any gaps in a child's Speaking and Listening development. Staff can then provide a bespoke programme to support each child's development.
  • Family Liaison Officer - our Lizzie Jones is available to support our families ensuring that a child's barriers to  learning is removed. She works with External Agencies so that the best outcomes for every child are achieved.
  • Community Works - Sue Dawkins works with our families for one day each week. She holds Drop In's and also supports families struggling with their child's behaviours. She is available 24/7. Those families who have been lucky enough to engage with Sue, have found her support and advice invaluable, resulting in better behaved children, and happier relationships at home and in School.

How we measure the impact:

The attainment (what level your child is working at) and the progress (how much they have improved) of your child, is monitored at half termly intervals. As part of this process we examine the difference between children receiving Pupil Premium and those who do not. We check to see that the performance of both groups is similar.

How are we doing:

Grove Street Primary  is in a unique position, in that, in some of our classes children receiving Pupil Premium are out-performing those who do not. We  provide a termly update on any performance difference to the Standards and Attainment Committee of the Governing Body, and then the Full Committee.

Although their may be a difference in performance between both groups, please consider that their could be a many factors that contribute to this.
