Mathematics in Year 1

Our School follows a Mastery Maths programme called 'Power Maths' . This programme uses a mastery approach which aims to deepen children's learning of mathematical concepts. The children are then given time to apply their knowledge and understanding in different ways. Whilst we follow Power Maths, we ensure to cater to our children and use a range of appropriate resources and activities to support teaching and learning.

In Year 1, we have three sessions of Maths each day.

Fluency (9-9:15)

This session focuses on the key learning foci to support problem solving. When children are fluent in these key skills they have attained a level of mastery that enables them to retrieve them for long-term memory without conscious effort or attention. This then allows childrne to focus on a deeper level of problem solving and removes some of the cognitive load.

The Year 1 Fluency objectives are:

                • Count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
                • Number bonds to 10
                • Number bonds to 20
                • 1 More 1 Less (any given number)
                • Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Every Friday we have a shared problem solving session. This is a chance to model how to solve problems and for children to work together to discuss and share their ideas. We work together to solve the problem following the five step structure- What, Explain, Convince, Justify and Prove. Children are encouraged to use mathematical language to support their case.

Mastering Number (10:45-11)

This academic year (2021-22), we have chosen to take part in the NCETM's (National Centre of Excellence in Teaching Mathematics) Mastering Number programme. This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children. More information can be found here:  https://www.ncetm.org.uk/maths-hubs-projects/mastering-number/

Mathematics Lesson (11-12)

Our lessons follow the Power Maths objectives across the year. We supplement Power Maths with bespoke resource for our cohort to challenge and deepen where required. Our lessons follow the structure- Revisit review, teach, practice, apply. We ensure there is ample opportunity for all children to access manipulatives in each session.

Active Learn

Active Learn is linked to Power Maths and is a website to support home learning with Mathematics. Each Friday, we send an activity home which is directly linked to the work we are completing  our maths lessons. Children access the activity at home- this could be an online or offline activity supported by parents.
