Hello 1EP.

In School this weekthe children have been looking at another Oliver Jeffers story called “The Way Back Home”.

Here are some of the activities the Year 1 children have been doing in school. We thought the rest of Year 1 might like to try these activities as their home learning tasks this week.

  • Read the story or watch a YouTube version of the story
  • Predict what else may be in the little boy’s cupboard that he may use on his next adventure e.g. a hot air balloon, a magic carpet, a skateboard etc. Fold a sheet of paper to look like doors, open them up then draw and label your ideas inside. (See our Dojo stories for examples)
  • With an adult, make predictions about what may happen next as you listen to the story. Which is your favourite part of the story and why?
  • Visit www.oliverjeffers.com to enjoy the author, Oliver Jeffers reading the story. (To find the video go to ‘Books’, then ‘Stay at home storytime’
  • The Oliver Jeffers website has lots of free activities linked to his stories such as dot to dots, a collage, a hanging mobile and many more. (To find these go to his homepage and click ‘Shop’ and then ‘Free’.)
  • Make a clay/ playdough alien to go with the characters from last week. (See our Dojo stories for examples).
  • Draw the little boy in his plane and the alien in his space ship. We used pastel crayons, then inked over the picture to make the darkness. If you don’t have pastels you could paint the picture or chalk it on black paper if you have any.  (See Dojo story for examples)
  • Refer back to your drawing of what might be in the boy’s magic cupboard. Talk about what he may choose to take him on his next adventure, where he goes, who he meets and what problem he needs to solve. Can you make up your own story orally? You may like to have a go at writing a few sentences about the beginning of his new adventure.

If you are able to complete any of these activities please send any photos or comments on dojo messages.

Hello Year 1! We hope you're all OK.

In School the children have been enjoying the story “Lost and Found” by Oliver Jeffers.

Here are some of the activities the Year 1 children have been doing in school. We thought the rest of Year 1 might like to try these activities as their home learning tasks this week.

  • Read the story or watch a YouTube version of the story
  • Predict what the little boy might need to take in his suitcase on a journey to the South Pole. Draw pictures of the items within an outline of a suitcase and label them. (See our Dojo stories for examples)
  • With an adult, discuss the character’s changing feelings throughout the story. Write down some of your ideas and a sentence or two.
  • Visit www.oliverjeffers.com to enjoy the author, Oliver Jeffers reading the story. (To find the video go to ‘Books’, then ‘Stay at home storytime’
  • The Oliver Jeffers website has lots of free activities linked to his stories such as making a puppet, a collage, a hanging mobile and many more. (To find these go to his homepage and click ‘Shop’ and then ‘Free’.)
  • Make clay/ playdough characters with matchstick legs. (See our Dojo stories for examples).
  • Paint a background of the sea and sky at the South Pole and add the characters, iceberg and boat onto the painting. (See Dojo story for examples)
  • Talk and write about your own experiences of lost and found, e.g. losing a teddy.
